Exhibition “Along the intertwined paths” from February 14 to May 19, 2024 at the Maison Alexandra David-Neel. “Whoever returns from traveling the world is on his return what he will be all his life” – Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
Golnaz Payani, born in Tehran in 1986, is an Iranian artist, exiled in France at the age of 23. From her country of origin, she carries an affinity for fabrics associated with the design of toys during her childhood and, later, the realities of a regime imposing the veil as the basis of its legitimacy. For the Maison David-Neel museum, she works on her favorite subject: the trace, between presence and disappearance, mainly narrated through textile works.
Golnaz Payani sketches parallels between two women whose center of gravity is a passion for Asia: Alexandra David-Neel (1868-1969), exploratory writer, first Westerner to enter Lhasa in 1924; Krishna Riboud (1935-2000) Franco-Indian collector whose work was to bring together nearly 4000 fabrics from the Orient, today in the collections of the National Museum of Asian Arts – Guimet. Three of them, rare or archaeological pieces, are exceptionally on loan and enrich the reflection proposed by the artist on textiles as a work of art, revealing messages and identities.
