Understanding this landscape refers to the geological history of the last 100 million years: a first syncline oriented north-south (that of Esclangon) was formed; the second, that of Auribeau, is formed later but oriented perpendicular to the first; a third fold, the Martelet anticline, curls above the other two, giving the impression that there is only one. It is the shape of this Auribeau syncline that earned it the nickname of velodrome, a sea basin filled in and then deformed when the Alps arose.
