The RN85 Napoleon Road
The village, which today has nearly 2000 inhabitants, welcomes travelers coming from Digne-les-Bains with a friendly sign: “Napoleon stopped there, why not you? ". The history of Malijai is marked in particular by that of its castle, representative of the classic elegance of the end of the 1770th century. Built in 4, this castle owes much of its fame to Napoleon who spent the night there from March 5 to 1815, XNUMX, on his return from the island of Elba.
The parish church of Saint-Christophe, rebuilt in 1839 on the site of the former Notre-Dame d'Espérance church, has an interesting choir fresco, a few stained glass windows and paintings. Next to the castle, the French-style park and the bowling alley under the plane trees offer beautiful moments of relaxation to visitors.
Hikes on the Route Napoléon GR406
This prestigious epic gave rise to the creation of a long-distance hiking route unique in France: the GR 406, to be covered on horseback or on foot on the historic route taken by the Emperor's troops, between Castellane and Sisteron (130 km) via Digne-les-Bains, Malijai, Volonne… In 2016 the National Equestrian Tourism Committee awarded the “Grand Equestrian Route” label to the Route Napoléon on horseback. Maps and guides available at the Tourist Office.
Around Malijai
After crossing the Bléone bridge to go up the D8 you will find along the left bank of the river a path that leads to the farm of St Florent (about 5km) to discover the old abandoned village of Chénerilles camped on the edge on the Puimichel plateau where the largest park of photovoltaic panels in France has just been set up.
5 km from Malijai is the village of Les Mées, famous for its narrow rocks that rise dramatically over 100 meters above the village. It is also the largest olive-growing town in Haute-Provence with its 100 olive trees, several oil mills and olive groves can be visited.
