The CAIRN (Informal Art Center for Research on Nature) strives to reread, interpret and reconfigure the territory that surrounds it through the eyes of various artists such as Mark Dion, Delphine Gigoux-Martin, Herman de Vries, Andy Goldsworthy…
Born in 2000 on the initiative of the Gassendi Museum, the Cairn constitutes an artistic laboratory which supports and disseminates contemporary creation in rural areas. It offers exhibitions produced by artists in residence with a cultural program and mediation actions with different audiences. In partnership with the UNESCO Geopark and local authorities, the CAIRN art center has produced a collection of works on the territory of the Alpes de Haute-Provence. Designed in relation to the context, scattered near the villages or along the paths, the works produced by the Cairn invite visitors to discover the landscapes crossed in a different way, offering another point of view on the sites, the history and the local traditions.
The Cairn is part of BOTOX(S), the Alps and Riviera contemporary art network, of dca / French association for the development of contemporary art centers and of the ELAN network (European Land Art Network) and it benefits from the financial support of the Ministry Culture/DRAC Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region and the town of Digne-les-Bains.
Focused on contemporary art, the Cairn is part of the Ambulo museum center, made up of two other departments:
– Gassendi Museum / Art and science
– Maison Alexandra David-Neel / Asian Arts and Writer’s House
