Le boulevard Gassendi owes its name to Pierre Gassendi, mathematician, philosopher, theologian and astronomer born in 1592 in Champtercier, a small village located a few kilometers from Digne les Bains.

 

On Saturday mornings, the boulevard becomes pedestrianized and hosts the Provençal market of Digne-les-Bains, one of the most beautiful in the region.

Place General de Gaulle

Open on Boulevard Gassendi, Place Général de Gaulle asserts itself as the center of the city. It’s the ideal place to have a drink on the terrace, stroll through the bookstore or even have lunch in the shade of the trees.

Formerly called “the Pré de foires”, Place Général de Gaulle has been home to products from the Pays Dignois since the Middle Ages.

In the middle of the square, the statue of Pierre Gassendi, in ecclesiastical attire. The roll of parchment he carries in his hand symbolizes his activity as a philosopher. At his feet, the terrestrial globe evokes his activity as a mathematician and astronomer.
Gassendi was also provost and consul of the chapter of Digne. He had the right to pass judgment and bear arms. He was an important character in the life of the City. And, a bit like our elected officials today, he had to inquire about the well-being of his fellow citizens and their possible recriminations. He resided mainly in Paris where he frequented the scholars of his time. In his works, he criticized the philosophy of Aristotle and adopted the atomistic theory of Epicurus. He fought Descartes then reconciled with him.

Did you know?

In Provençal, arete means ram. Before the Revolution, a butcher ran his shop here. Despite the regulations, he sold ram meat pretending it was sheep. The butcher was convicted and the fine paid was used to beautify the place.

Rue du Jeu de Paume and Rue de l’Hubac

Small pedestrian streets parallel to Boulevard Gassendi, Rue du Jeu de Paume and Rue de l'Hubac invite you to enter the old town of Digne les Bains. They are the starting point towards Rue Capitoul, Montée des Prisons, Rue Pardessus or Montée St Charles leading straight to the top of “Rochas”, the highest district of the city where you can admire the Gothic St Jerome Cathedral. Lively little shopping streets, you will fall under the spell of their typically Provençal look, narrow, colorful and all high up.
