Along the water
Haute Provence has always been a territory marked by water. Millions of years ago, the sea completely covered our region and the many fossils of marine animals (ammonites, ichthyosaurs, etc.) unearthed bear witness to this! Today the lagoons have disappeared but the water is still present: torrents, lakes and rivers shape our landscapes. It is not uncommon to discover majestic gorges or clues at the bend of a road or a path! Over time, the water dug its bed and shaped the features of a region with a strong character.
In the heart of Haute Provence, Digne les Bains is crossed by three rivers! The city is located at the confluence of three valleys: the Bléone, the Mardaric and the Eaux Chaudes. It is from this last valley that springs a famous thermal spring since Antiquity.
Nowadays, spas are fed continuously by the Ophelia borehole, to a depth of 870 meters. With chloride, sulfate, sulfide, sodium and calcium, these waters with multiple virtues are the subject of three-week treatments in rheumatology, respiratory tract and ENT as well as mini preventive treatments. One "wellness area" also allows you to enjoy the benefits of this water.
Downstream of Gorges du Verdon, lake of Sainte Croix bears witness to the importance and indispensability of water in the territory. Its hydroelectric dam retains 767 million cubic meters of water and forms the second artificial lake in France by surface area. Scooping point it is not uncommon to attend the impressive ballet of the canadairs!
With its neighbour, the Serre-Ponçon lake, further north beyond the Vallée de la Blanche, these two stretches of water have made an infinite variety of water sports and leisure activities possible: pedal boats, sailing, paddle boats, electric boats... there is a wide range of choices!
For thrill seekers, many canyons and ravines are equipped for canyoning or aqua hiking!
